Theme Month! December 2024: The Working Girl

Welcome to December! This month, we will be looking at portrayals of working class women at work on the silent screen.

Silent movies had their share of princesses, queens and duchesses but they also had plenty of domestic workers, factory employees, shop clerks and more, women just trying to get by. This month, we will be looking at the way these women were portrayed in films ranging from serious drama to silly comedy.

Here are some past reviews to give you a taste of what is to come:

Shoes (1916) is a serious look at the grinding plight of the working poor, sensitively directed by Lois Weber.

Mr. Flip (1909) is a silly comedy about a masher who attempts to harass women at their jobs but soon finds them fighting back with the tools of their trades.

Love ’em and Leave ’em (1926) is an early Louise Brooks picture but Evelyn Brent steals the show as a tough and sensible department store employee.

Lady of the Night (1925) portrays a far older profession with Norma Shearer in dual roles as an heiress and a hard-working working girl.
