John Barrymore rocketed to movie super-stardom with his bold double performance in this horror classic. Chews scenery and throats with equal relish. Perhaps a bit too much at times.
He is ably supported by Martha Mansfield (Jekyll’s fiancee) and Nita Naldi (Hyde’s mistress). The makeup is justly famous, as are the spectacularly creepy visual effects.

How does it end? Hover or tap below for a spoiler.
When Hyde threatens Jekyll’s fiancee, the good doctor poisons himself and kills both of them.Read my full-length review here.
If it were a dessert it would be: Death by Oreo Cupcakes. It’s a cookie! It’s a cupcake! It’s light! It’s dark! One thing’s certain: it’s a classic.
Availability: Released on DVD and Bluray.

Enjoyed your review, as always, then looked up the full-length one, in which you declined to do a Silents vs Talkies feature with comparisons to the March and Tracy portrayals.
If you ever reconsider that stance, I’d be very interested in getting your take on all three versions. I’m personally not overly fond of any of them, or of the book either, but it is certainly true that each of the films features outstanding actors and production values. And unlike the trio of ‘Prisoner of Zenda’ films, (which made for a great Silents vs Talkies article), none of them are exact remakes.
I honestly didn’t like the talkie versions at all. While Naldi’s character was definitely abused in this version, I felt that the portrayals of the abuse of Miriam Hopkins and Ingrid Bergman jumped into giddy sadism and made me really uncomfortable, so much so that I simply did not have any desire to rewatch them for review.
