Welcome to a new year! We are kicking things off with strange and twisted humor of the silent era.
Silent era comedies covered every flavor of humor, from sophisticated satire to bedroom farces to gross out humor. We’re going to be looking at the more extreme end of the spectrum with comedic death, disgusting substances and general bad taste our main areas of focus.
I’ve already reviewed a few, ahem, less tasteful films. The Maniac Barber (1899) portrays decapitation during a shave. How Bridget Served the Salad Undressed (1898) is play on the stereotypical Irish maid of the era. A Wayfayer Compelled to Disrobe Partially (1897) finds humor in a mugger stripping a man from the City. Onesime vs Onesime (1912) is a sci-fi short about a man who turns to dismemberment in order to rid himself of his obnoxious clone.
So, we will continue our trashy, tacky or extreme journey into the less genteel side of silent comedy. Enjoy!
