Summer is upon us, so let’s have a fiery theme to match a fiery season. June’s reviews will all cover women taking revenge for all manner of slights and in all manner of ways.
Revenge was as popular a topic during the silent era as it is today. It was also considered a dangerous topic and was one of the items on the long list of forbidden topics under the Code. (In a modern setting, that is. Historical vengeance was a-okay.)
I’ve covered revenge pictures before, more on the boy side of things, and here are some highlights:
The Toll Gate: William S. Hart, a bandit betrayed by his disloyal lieutenant, escapes in order to seek vengeance.
Behind the Door: Hobart Bosworth in one of the most infamous revenge pictures in the history of film. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Monte Cristo: John Gilbert plays the lead in this adaptation of Dumas’ revenge and adventure classic.
West of Zanzibar: Revenge backfires for Lon Chaney in this sweaty, sleazy and in all ways nasty trash cinema masterpiece.
Rusalka: A betrayed water nymph takes violent vengeance on a Russian prince in this early movie classic.
Okay, ladies! Take it away!
