All right, my darlings, it’s time to expect the unexpected. I feel that my site is not random enough (hee hee heeeee) and I am going to fix that by selecting silent films that star people who are NOT known for silent films.
In the past, I have reviewed films with cameos: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the intro of The Lost World, poet James Whitcomb Riley in the intro of Little Orphant Annie (sic because his poems involved baby talk), Sing Sing warden Thomas Mott Osborne in Alias Jimmy Valentine, and chess champ José Raúl Capablanca in Chess Fever.
This time, though, I am kicking things into high gear. These non-silent celebrities will not just have cameos, they will be the stars of the film or at least play a significant supporting role. I have entertainers, sports figures and future talkie stars lined up. The only thing they have in common? They are famous for something OTHER than silent movies.
I hope you will enjoy!
I will be looking forward to this and I feel Hedy Lamarr will make an appearance or should I say Hedley:)
Lamarr is a little young for silents (she joined the industry during the sound takeover) but I have plenty of fascinating folks to make up for it.
Ohhhh a mystery a “Master Mystery” perhaps?
We shall see 😉
Is that “Chess Fever” or “The Chess Player”? Your link says the former. Regards.
The link is fixed now, thanks! 🙂
Thin Man actors (coupled or separately) Myrna Loy and William Powell……?
I’ve covered a couple of their silents (thanks for reminding me, I should add links to the main page) and it is a BLAST to see them typecast as villains.
Since we’re watching Double Indemnity right now, Barbara Stanwyck was in one or two silents, if memory serves- it doesn’t always 😉
Not in starring roles probably, so that’s a disqualifier.
Yes, she was indeed but (also going from memory) I believe they are lost. Ditto with the Claudette Colbert silents. 😦
