Theme Month! March 2026: Scotland (and a Short Break)

This March, we will be looking at portrayals of Scotland and Scottish culture, as well as Scottish talent in the silent era. Scotland was portrayed on the screen from the very dawn of projected cinema and several of its citizens became beloved comedians and character actors in Hollywood.

On a side note, I will be in Scotland for part of March to attend the Hippfest, which is screening my release of Kidnapped (1917), set in Scotland and filmed in New Jersey. As a result, my Scottish theme month will likely bleed over into April, so there will be more films covered than usual but I will be taking a break from posting while I attend the festival.

As for the films I will be reviewing for this theme, I will be taking time to appreciate Scottish productions, Scotland as portrayed by other nations, some charming independent/home productions, and, of course, a salute to some of the Scottish talent of the silent era. James Finlayson, a personal favorite of mine, Andy Clyde, and Ernest Torrence were all born in Scotland, as were directors Frank Lloyd, master of the swashbuckler, and James Williamson, purveyor of twisted comedy and a great early film pioneer.

So, pull up a chair, relax and enjoy all things silent and Scottish.
