Suppose you’re in a situation where it would be advantageous to be married or have a kid or provide an aunt as a chaperone. Sure, you could come clean but wouldn’t it be so much better to fake it? This month, we’re going to be looking at silent films featuring fake family.
The fakery may be a friend dressed up. It may be hired help. It may be you pretending to be yourself and another person to fool them all. Or, in a reversal, maybe the spouse is pretending to be another person, usually to catch a philanderer in the act. However it’s done, it’s phony.
Here are a few titles I have already covered to set the mood:
Charley’s Aunt, the most famous film of this genre, featuring Syd Chaplin as the title character.
Mum’s the Word, Charley Chase and Martha Sleeper pose as servants when their parents marry.
Naughty Boy, Lupino Lane is an adult son but has to pretend to be a child so his father can lie about his age.
All Night, Rudolph Valentino and Carmel Myers pretend to be married for a long, long night.
