Theme Month! August 2024: Pants

Looking for a little silent era funny business? Of course you are, but what?

Custard pies? No! Seltzer in the face? No! We’re going to be looking at one of the most popular silent era comedy gags: the pants problem.

While it’s not as famous as pies and seltzer, losing one’s trousers was a venerable tradition in movie comedy and even made its way into more mainstream pictures where thrown baked goods would have been decidedly unwelcome. (And, needless to say, pies in the face were not nearly as common as we may have been led to believe.)

We’re in the doldrums of summer, so a bit of cute trouser comedy is just what the doctor ordered. I will be reviewing a variety of films from the 1900s to the 1920s with stars both obscure and famous. So, sit back, relax and enjoy some extremely silly antics.

If you want a little preview, here are some reviews of pants comedies I have already published:

The Cruise of the Jasper B is not entirely about pants but Rod La Rocque’s home and all its contents are repossessed while he is in the bath and so, he is obliged to go about dressed only in a towel, much to the delight of nearby ladies.

Putting Pants on Philip is probably the most famous pants comedy of them all, featuring Stan Laurel as a Scottish lad in Los Angeles and Oliver Hardy as his uncle, trying desperately to, well, you know.

I hope you will enjoy the upcoming pantsathon.
