Put on a happy face! Chase those blues away! Silent movies were filled with peppy, get-up-and-go protagonists who won the day (after a few setbacks) with a good attitude and a can-do spirit– and then there were the movies that satirized that very attitude.
This month, we will be examining optimism in silent films. We’ve already covered the grinning derring-do of Douglas Fairbanks in A Modern Musketeer, the all-too-fleeting innocence of Richard Barthelmess in Tol’able David, and the hilarious sendup of Fairbanksian pep in A Kiss from Mary Pickford.
There are plenty more films in this genre, so put on a happy face (or a grumpy one, as we will also be covering satire) and get ready for pep, zip, spunk, and moxie.
