Theme Month! February 2024: 125 Years Ago… Films of 1899

The century was turning and movies were advancing at a rapid pace. It had become clear that projected cinema was no passing fad and movies were becoming longer, more elaborate and more expensive.

As with any era of change, some film companies were sticking with what had worked for the past four years: actualities, footage of performers of the stage and sporting world, and snippets of famous shows. Others, however, were releasing multi-scene extravaganzas and, in some cases, multimedia events that combined moving pictures with slides and lectures.

We will be reviewing the dynamic and fascinating output of 1899 this month. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I will.

Here are some 1899 films I have already reviewed:

The Dreyfus Affair

Cinderella

The Maniac Barber

Wonderful Absinthe
