Happy Anniversary to Me! (Movies Silently is Eight Years Old)

If this website were a human child, it would be well into its grade school career. If it were a skirt, it would probably be out of style. If it were a wine, it would be starting to get expensive. Yes, Movies Silently has turned eight years old!

I launched the site in March of 2009 with five whole reviews and switched to a daily post format in 2013. Since then, I have accomplished:

300 Silent Films Reviewed: That’s a lot!

Dozens of Recipes Tested: I just published my 48th taste test of a silent star recipe. I’m kind of addicted to vintage celebrity cookbooks now.

Lots of Lists: Lists are a fun and easy way to convey a whole slew of information into the waiting brains of readers. Mwahahaha!

Assorted Nonsense: I have published polls, quizzes, GIFs and anything else that pops into my brain.

Not bad at all, is it? The overall goal of this site has always been to make silent films accessible to everyone, no film history degree required. My secondary goal is to step off the beaten path and show that there is much more to silent cinema than Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, the Germans and D.W. Griffith. (If you think this isn’t still a problem, you need to step out of the film geek bubble and explore the wilds of the internet. Or Time Magazine.) My third goal is to showcase mainstream Hollywood dramas, which are often sidelined in favor of comedies and European fare.

Let’s pop the sparkling cider and celebrate. Here’s to another eight years!
