Theme Month! June 2025: The Baltic States

A little late but it’s been a month! June has been all about the cinema of the three Baltic states: Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

The three nations had been under Russian rule prior to the First World War and, with their new independence, all three sought to tell their own localized stories on the movie screen, Latvia and Estonia through fiction, Lithuania through a series of government-approved actualities.

And, of course, I also reviewed the film that inspired this theme in the first place: Flow (2024), which won the Academy Award for best animated film (Latvia’s first) and has absolutely no dialogue.

A huge thanks to everyone who recommended other Baltic titles that allowed me to fill out this month with a complete tour of the region.
