Theme Month! May 2024: Flight!

Just for fun, as a friend which came first: movies or heavier-than-air flight. I wager they may not get it right!

Well, this month, we are going to be focusing on flight in the movies, both heavier and lighter than air. While trains were the iconic transportation of the silent era, flights were ever popular and featured in comedies, dramas, and action films alike. Blimps, balloons, airplanes and, sometimes, fantastic devices from the imaginations of filmmakers, this month will be all about celebrating leaving terra firma.

To whet your appetite, here are a few flighty titles I have already covered:

The Inventor Crazybrains and His Wonderful Airship (1905): A Méliès fantasy about, well, that airship but the colorful concoction is darker than we may have first believed.

The Flying Ace (1926): A delightfully pulpy crime tale made in Jacksonville, Florida and the only complete surviving feature of the Norman company.

The Pirates of 1920 (1911): British near-future sci-fi with pirates using their airship to raid unsuspecting homes.

First International Competition for Airplanes in Brescia (1909): A real Italian airshow caught on film. Lots of wonderful early aircraft lovingly captured.

I hope you will enjoy my new review selections for May! Happy flying!
