Comedians are wonderful but working in pairs can be twice as nice and this month is celebrating the chemistry of funny people who were better together.
I am, of course, a lifelong Laurel and Hardy fan but this month’s focus will be on both official and unofficial or one-off duos, ranging from the famous to the obscure. I have discovered that the magical spark of a comedy team is very important to me and factors heavily into my favorite humorous films, so November will be all about celebrating that magic.
Previously, I have covered the Boys in their first co-starring picture, Duck Soup, and their famous kilt comedy after they were officially teamed, Putting Pants on Philip, as well as the saucy Double Whoopee, in which Jean Harlow humorously loses her skirt thanks to Stan and Ollie’s antics.
But comedy teams weren’t just found on the Hal Roach or Mack Sennett lots. I loved the interplay between Mary Pickford and ZaSu Pitts in A Little Princess. Both ladies were talented comedians in their own right and Pickford’s spunk combined with Pitts’ flutter was simply irresistible.
Anita Garvin and Marion Byron were teamed as a female answer to Laurel and Hardy and, while the duo didn’t last, their glorious ice cream comedy A Pair of Tights is the stuff of comedy legend.
Laura La Plante and Reginald Denny managed to pull off a very difficult feat in Skinner’s Dress Suit: a couple that is both happily married and hilarious! Their good-natured romance and penchant for dancing end up saving the day when they stare down the menace of (gulp) debt from their frivolous retail purchases. Truly, a timeless plot!
I hope you will enjoy the selections in store for November.

This is going to be a fun theme! What could be better, really? James Parrott and Eddie Baker did some shorts together. I’ve only seem one but they looked like a good duo to me.
