Readers Respond: How Many Silent Films They Have Seen So Far This Year

I asked the readers of this site to answer a brief survey telling me how many silent films they have seen so far this year. Here are the results!

None Yet: 8%
One: 3%
Two to Five: 31%
Six to Ten: 22%
Ten to Twenty: 18% (sorry, should have read eleven to twenty but what can I do?)
Twenty-One or More: 18%

Wow! A lot of you have watched a lot of silent movies and I salute you! For those of you who haven’t see one yet, don’t feel guilty! This poll was about information and not shaming and I am glad you were able to participate.

Here is the entirety of the Roundhay Garden Scene in GIF form. Now you have seen a silent movie.

I enjoyed your feedback on this and thanks so much for helping me out.

That’s a lot of silent film watching for 2019 already! For those who have yet to take the plunge into the silent movie pool: please come on in, the water’s fine!

Proud to count myself and partner among those who watch silents almost every weekend (and sometimes in between). We’re also big (like so many here at MS) on re-watching for nuance, detail, and pure enjoyment. Currently sifting through Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers boxed set once again 🙂

After saving every $2 coin from my change for a few months I found myself able to buy a much larger (55″) and HD TV. So working my way through repeated viewing of many films, silent and sound.
It’s interesting to see what I expected: the best quality looks even better, the films that couldn’t be sourced from a good quality original show their flaws; Buster Keaton’s ‘The Goat’ being an example. The finale where he emerges back from China was apparently long lost, now rediscovered, but it’s had a bumpy ride.
