While Australia didn’t have the largest film industry during the silent era, it can claim the earliest known narrative feature, early innovations in custom film scores, the mad antics of photographer and director Frank Hurley, as well as a bevy of Hollywood notables like Mae Busch, Enid Bennett, Billy Bevan, and the wonderful Snub Pollard. And this is just scratching the surface.
This month, we are going to be looking at Australia and Australians on the silent screen, how they contributed to the silent era and how they were portrayed, both by themselves and by foreign filmmakers.
It’s going to be a fun whirlwind tour through the earliest days of Australia on film. Enjoy!
