Before he was the king of costume swashbucklers, Douglas Fairbanks excelled at action-comedies and this is one of his very best. From imaginative and surreal special effects to a surprisingly dark storyline, this picture is full of surprises from beginning to end.
The best part, however, is the chemistry between Fairbanks and leading lady Kathleen Clifford. Their characters are united by their eccentric superstition and Fairbanks and Clifford are a treat to watch. A pity they never reunited onscreen. Highly recommended.
How does it end? Hover or tap below for a spoiler.Fairbanks was being gaslit by a mad scientist but he realizes that he is sane and wins the hand of Clifford.
If it were a dessert it would be: Halva. Nutty, delightful, irresistible.
