Fun Size Review: The Perils of Pauline (1914)

One of THE most iconic cliffhanger serials (never mind that it contains no cliffhangers) starring one of the most important serial queens is… not that good.

The film is marred by a repetitious plot, a clueless heroine lacking agency and weirdly translated title cards. Okay, the last one isn’t the serial’s fault and it does add some amusement, which it desperately needs. This one is for historical purposes only. (And, no, this was not the first serial.)

How does it end? Hover or tap below for a spoiler.

Our heroine decides to give up adventuring and become a housewife. Boo!

If it were a dessert it would be: Lime Jello Tuna Salad. It worked in your grandmother’s day but who wants to marry your grandmother? Nobody, not even your grandfather. (You know things are bad when I dust off the Groucho Marx banter.)

Availability: Released on DVD.
