Fun Size Review: Tarzan of the Apes (1918)

Tarzan’s very first film appearance, this movie stars Elmo Lincoln, silent movie strongman and THE Tarzan to movie audiences until Johnny Weissmuller showed up.

The film is a mixed bag of hokum, wacky acting and racism but if you can get past all that (your mileage may vary), it holds up pretty well. Enid Markey is an adorable Jane and Elmo Lincoln’s antics are pretty amusing. No masterpiece but a fun bit of pulp.

How does it end? Hover or tap below for a spoiler.

It ends rather abruptly with Tarzan successfully wooing Jane and rejoining the Europeans.

If it were a dessert it would be: Orange Carrot Jello. On the old-fashioned side but it still has an undeniable appeal.

Availability: Released on DVD.
